Cardiac Maintenance

Program Overview

The YMCA’s nurse-supervised cardiac rehabilitation program provides guidance in developing individuals’ exercise prescription, monitoring blood pressure and heart rates, cholesterol and glucose levels, and encouraging strength training and healthy nutritional choices. The Cardiac Club currently has over 300 active participants with a range of cardio/pulmonary problems. A physician’s referral is not required to participate in the program however a physician’s consent is needed for all incoming participants. For those just completing Phase II hospital programs, the YMCA provides the perfect environment for continued recovery.

The YMCA’s on-site nurse, exercise physiologists and dietitians are the perfect support team for your cardiac rehab and have created a program emphasizing overall health and wellness.

Program offerings by community health specialists, aerobic classes designed with the senior in mind and a variety of aquatics programs make the YMCA’s Cardiac Program the best choice for you.

Cardiac Club News

The Cardiac Club reminds you: Do you have a “drug” problem?

Consider this: Millions of people don’t take their medications properly, or quit taking them completely and the consequences can be deadly. On average, half of the people who have heart disease or asthma skip doses or otherwise mess up their medications. Perhaps they forget a dose, or start feeling better and toss the rest of the bottle, or skip a dose in fear of side effects. Examples of those particularly at risk are people who have no symptoms, the elderly, and teenagers who may forget to correctly take an asthma medication 30% of the time.

Even doctors mess up, acknowledging in one study that they adhere to their own prescriptions only 75% of the time. When you add up the extra costs that are preventable, such as extra doctor visits, nursing home admissions, hospitalizations and even premature death, a report indicates that poor medication adherence costs the country $177 billion in medical bills and lost productivity.

Whatever the cause, make “Take your medicine” a new priority. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is trying to promote through advertising the dangers of misusing medications and taking them properly.
